Geography of Japan

 

The territory of modern Japan was colonized throughout its history. Thus for a long time Japan was divided and the separate parts of the country lived its own life. We should not forget that Japan is located in several climatic zones.

All this provides considerable climatic, natural and cultural diversity of the country. Each region and each Prefecture is different from other sights, cuisine, dialect of the Japanese language. On this page we describe the features of each of the eight regions of the country.

District Hokkaido

The area of Hokkaido is one Prefecture of the same name and is the northernmost of the large Japanese Islands that bears the same name. The capital of the Prefecture is the city of Sapporo .

Hokkaido is the northernmost Japanese Prefecture. Here the coldest winters in Japan. Average winter temperature in Hokkaido is minus 6°. In summer, however, the average temperature is about 25°.

The population of the Prefecture is about 6 million people. The island is connected to Honshu 54-kilometer underwater tunnel, Seikan .

The district population is about 10 million people.

As Hokkaido, the Tohoku region is relatively cold. Its economy is also based on agriculture, this time in growing rice and fruit crops.

Many tourists are attracted as oak Tohoku, and many colorful festivals that are held in its largest cities.

The Chubu Region

The Chubu region is located in the center of Honshu island and includes nine prefectures: two from the Pacific ocean in Shizuoka and Aichi (the capital is Nagoya ), three mountain Prefecture – Yamanashi (the capital city is Kofu ), Nagano and Gifu . and four of the Prefecture from the sea of Japan – Fukui . Ishikawa . Toyama and Niigata .

The district population is about 21 million people.

Aichi Prefecture is famous for its machine-building industry, Shizuoka Prefecture – a traditional Japanese agriculture.

Mountain of the Prefecture of the Chubu region is famous for its vegetables and high-precision production equipment such as cameras, watches and so on.

The Kanto Region

The district population is about 40 million people.

The District Of Kinki (Kansai)

The kinki district is located in the West of the main island Honshu and includes seven prefectures: mie (capital – Zu ), Whitefish (capital – Otsu ), Nara . Wakayama . Kyoto . Osaka and Hyogo (the capital is Kobe ).

The district population is about 23 million people.

The kinki region – the former political and economic center of the country. Here are two ancient capitals of Japan Kyoto and Nara, still therefore representing huge interest for tourists.

Economic center is the city of Osaka, in ancient times became an important commercial and industrial center of the country. The main branches of its industry – shipbuilding and steelmaking.

In the center of kinki region is Japan’s largest lake Biwa .

The dialects of the Kanto-Ben and Kansai-Ben are two major dialects of the Japanese language. The Kyushu District
